Daily Energy across 1,921 models that report it.
Commercial refrigerators and freezers are rated by two numbers that matter most: total volume in cubic feet and daily energy consumption in kilowatt-hours. A larger unit holds more product but draws more power, so the useful comparison is energy per cubic foot — how efficiently the cabinet keeps its contents cold relative to its size.
The refrigerant type affects both efficiency and environmental impact. R-290 (propane) has a global warming potential of just 3, compared to over 1,400 for the R-404A still found in older equipment. ENERGY STAR certification requires meeting a federal efficiency standard, but the gap between the best and worst certified models can be 60% or more — certification is a floor, not a ceiling.
Dimensions matter for installation: measure the delivery path (doorways, elevators, tight corners) as carefully as the final location. The depth figure in these specifications is the cabinet body only — add 2–4 inches for door handles and 4–6 inches for rear condenser clearance.
Most efficient
Ranked by daily energy per cu ft, not raw consumption — otherwise this list would simply be the smallest units in the category.
