Clothes dryers are rated by the combined energy factor (CEF) in pounds of clothing per kilowatt-hour. A higher CEF means more drying per unit of energy. Heat pump dryers achieve CEF values 40–60% higher than conventional electric resistance dryers by recycling heat rather than venting it.
Vented dryers exhaust moist air outdoors and need ductwork. Ventless heat pump dryers condense moisture internally and can be installed anywhere with a power outlet — no exterior wall needed. Gas dryers use natural gas for heat and electricity for the drum motor; their operating cost depends on local gas versus electric rates.
