Annual Energy across 4,507 models that report it.
Residential refrigerators are rated by annual energy use in kilowatt-hours per year and total volume in cubic feet. Larger refrigerators use more energy, so comparing models of similar size gives a fairer picture of relative efficiency. The most efficient models in each size class use 30–50% less energy than the federal minimum.
Configuration affects both capacity and efficiency. French-door models offer wide shelves and split the cold-air loss across two small doors. Top-freezer models are typically the most energy-efficient layout. Side-by-side models provide equal access to both compartments but use more energy per cubic foot.
Most efficient
Ranked by annual energy per cu ft, not raw consumption — otherwise this list would simply be the smallest units in the category.
