Room air conditioners are rated by cooling capacity (BTU/hour) and combined energy efficiency ratio (CEER). Higher CEER means more cooling per watt of electricity. An 8,000 BTU unit cools a room up to about 350 square feet; a 12,000 BTU unit handles up to 550 square feet.
Window units and portable units serve different installation constraints. Window units are more efficient because the condenser sits outside, but they require a compatible window. Portable units vent through a hose and can go anywhere, but they exhaust some conditioned air along with the heat.
