Air-source heat pumps are rated by SEER2 (cooling efficiency), HSPF2 (heating efficiency), and EER2 (steady-state cooling efficiency). Higher numbers mean less electricity per unit of heating or cooling. A heat pump with HSPF2 of 10 delivers 10 BTU of heat per watt-hour, roughly three times more efficient than electric resistance heating.
Cold-climate heat pumps maintain heating output at temperatures well below freezing. Models rated down to 5°F or lower can serve as the primary heat source in most of the northern US and Canada without a backup furnace. The COP at 5°F column shows how efficient the unit is at that temperature — a COP of 2.0 means it still delivers twice the heat of electric resistance at 5°F.
