Efficacy across 1,010 models that report it.
Ventilating fans are rated by airflow (cubic feet per minute, CFM) and efficacy (CFM per watt). Higher efficacy means more air moved per unit of electricity. ENERGY STAR certified bathroom fans are nearly silent — rated at 1.0 sone or less at their lowest speed, compared to 3–4 sones for a typical uncertified fan.
Sizing depends on room volume: bathroom fans should exchange the room air 8 times per hour (a 50 sq ft bathroom with 8 ft ceilings needs about 50 CFM). Kitchen range hoods follow a different rule: 100 CFM per linear foot of range for wall-mounted hoods, 150 CFM per foot for island hoods.
